Of course I never had to pay money to do it, but it is still a pain to have to call and cancel.

apply for a credit card for which you are sure that you will not qualify. when they turn you down they are obligated by law to make all the documents and information they used to reject your application. this is a legal and free way to get your credit records and to make sure that these records are a complete set.
You can do it online for a minimal fee. I don’t know of any free ways of identifying your credit score. Try not to check it often, since every time that report is searched, you leave a paper trail. And it makes future lenders weary if your credit has been reviewed often, it makes them think you may have tried to get loans through previous banks/credit unions.
You can get a one-off credit check by applying by post or telephone to Experian.
If you apply by post you need to print off a form from their website and enclose a cheque for £2.
If you apply by telephone you need to go through an extrremely awful automated switchboard and eventually you will be able to record your details and payment info. and they will post the results to you. That service costs £3.50.
They will try and persuade you to sign up for the full service but what you want is the £2 Statutory Report.
Go to the Web Site “annualcreditreport.com” You can receive your credit reports from all three major reporting credit agencies once a year for free. There used to be a catch I’m not sure if it exists today. Though you get the reports for free you have to pay for the scores. This site was recommended By Suzi Orman. Yes there is! If you are in the USA you are entitled to a free credit report once a year.
According to the Federal Trade Commission:
“You may order your reports from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies at the same time, or you can order your report from each of the companies one at a time. The law allows you to order one free copy of your report from each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies every 12 months.”
I had the same case exactly a few months ago.
