The economic downturn of the last five years has affected millions of Americans, but it has also affected the budgets of states, cities and counties. With limited tax dollars with which to work, various government entities have had to try to stretch their budgets to allow them to continue to function. Many government agencies at the state and local levels have turned over debt collection to collection agencies, even for such seemingly small debts as parking tickets or library fines. What does this mean? An unpaid parking ticket could end upon on your credit report.

Credit reports and the associated FICO credit score have become an increasingly important part of the lives of Americans. At one time, the credit report was primarily used by mortgage lenders to determine if a prospective customer should be granted a loan. In recent years, the credit score and report have been used for an increasingly large number of uses by all kinds of companies. Employers use them to avoid hiring financially irresponsible people and landlords use them to determine if a person might be a responsible tenant. As credit reports are used more often, blemishes on your credit report become magnified in importance. In past years, only significant unpaid debts or bankruptcy filings might have inhibited the issuing of credit. But now, with credit reports being used by so many more businesses, something as small as an unpaid parking ticket can prevent someone from obtaining a job or a lease on a good apartment.

This system isn’t all that equitable; not all cities and counties report unpaid fines to the credit bureaus. Worse, while the company that originated the FICO score has adjusted their scoring system to account for small fines, not all lenders use that version of the scoring system. Because of this, whether or not such small things affect your credit score is can be determined by something as simple as where you live or with whom you choose to do business. Fair or not, consumers need to be aware that some small debts may find their way into the credit score and the only way to be sure is to check your credit report regularly.

Most Americans can obtain a copy of their credit report for free at http://www.annualcreditreport.com. Many people who have had their scores negatively affected by small fines were unaware that they even owed them. This can happen if the debtor has recently moved. Paying the fine can quickly resolve the problem and raise the credit score again, so by all means, check your credit report!

By: Charles Essmeier

About the Author:

Many people have bad credit become fixated on the idea of a particular score or number. Having a “beacon” score of 600, 650 or 550 and being able to get a car loan with the same, depends not so much on your score, per se. It depends more on the lender that you choose to obtain your credit through.

Using the Right Lenders…

So if you are wondering if you can get a car loan with a credit score of 600, the answer lies in understanding lenders and choosing the right type of lender to submit your credit application to.

There are many different people with many different credit scores and there are also many different lenders that have very different requirements for a car loan. What this means for you is that rather than wondering if you can get a car loan with your particular credit score, you should be looking for a lender that will accept you with your particular credit score.

Prime vs Subprime…

For example, some lenders (prime) that offer car loans prefer that the applicant have a credit score of at least 700 or better. Other lenders may look for a score of 650 or above, while there are some that will offer car credit to someone that has a score as low as 480 (subprime).

You Can Get Approved…

Credit takes a long time to improve. It’s a great idea to work on improving your credit score however, while you are working on that you can still get approved for a car loan if you simply find the best lender to suit you. You may be pleasantly surprised at what is available for you, based on your income.

By: Jason Lanier

About the Author:

Credit score rankings are the foundation of understanding what your rating means, which is really the foundation of all your financial endeavors. Whenever you go to apply for an apartment, a loan, and even a job, people will look at your rating. If you don’t know what your rating means, you won’t know what to expect in these circumstances, or how to make them better.

The truth is that every company decides for themselves what numbers they think are bad, acceptable, good, or excellent, so reactions will slightly vary from place to place. We can get a general range, however, and make changes from there.

Credit score rankings go from about 350 to 850, with people on either end being extremely rare. Most people will have ratings between 450 and 750.

When you are under 600 you are in a bad place. Towards the top of this you may be able to find people to work with in some instances, but for the most part you won”t be able to get loans or make other financial goals possible.

People in between 600 to 650 are still in an iffy place, but for the most part your rating is acceptable. You will be seen as a risk, however, and your interest rates on loans or insurance will be very high.

Ratings between 651 and 680 should always be acceptable, but your interest rates are still unfavorable.

A good place to be is between 681 and 720. This is a strong score and you’ll have a nice interest rates, sometimes you’ll even be offered the best rate at less competitive places.

Anything over 721 is excellent! You’ll get the best interest rates and most flexibility out of companies because they’ll want to keep you as customer.

Your rating is calculated based on information in your credit report, so if you don’t like where you fall on this range, or you want to look at keeping things clean to keep your rating up high, you’ll want to look at your report and see if there are any things you could be doing better to look better to creditors.

While this can all be very confusing, knowing all of this will help you take control of your finances and move forward. Hopefully this information has shown you where you stand, and where you’d like your credit score rankings to be.

By: Jennifer Quilter

About the Author:

Credit reports can be a bit of a balancing act. On one hand they need you to take out credit so that they (the big three credit reporting agencies) can see that you have a good payment history otherwise they have nothing to base a credit report on. But if you take out too much different credit too quickly then they can see you as being a bad risk for their clients thereby preventing you from obtaining a good credit ranking and possibly favorable credit terms on future purchases.

The trick is if you are looking for credit, whatever it is for, then only apply for the credit that you really want. Don’t apply for many different products so you have a better chance of one of them accepting you. Of course, it can be difficult trying to determine just how long do credit inquiries stay on a credit report and when you can start applying for purchases requiring credit again without it adversely affecting your credit history.

Although you may want to know and may routinely ask yourself “how long do credit inquiries stay on a credit report” for perfectly good reasons it is not always easy to get a straight answer to the question. Credit report companies can be very secretive about exactly how they compile their reports for very good reasons and are unlikely to give you any real help, information or guidance even if you are trying to find out why you have been refused by a merchant for credit.

For a general guideline as to how long do credit inquiries stay on a credit reports, it is usually safe to estimate about 2 years. And if you have been refused credit because of this it is usually a good idea to wait for about 6 additional months before applying again for another loan. Even if you have been applying for credit cards and are now looking for a mortgage the credit card applications will appear on your credit report for the mortgage company.

The best way to make sure that the credit check companies do not see you as having too many applications for loans is to not apply for more than one or two things at a time. That way they may see each application as separate and you will not look like someone who is just applying for a lot of different products or credit at the same time. Of course if you get refused for the loan you are looking for then you are free to always apply to different loan and credit agency or company. Just remember, it is not usually a good idea to apply for too many at the same time. This way your credit is much more likely to be looked at favorably by the credit report company.

By: Tim Gorman

About the Author:
