How do I find the collection companies on my credit bureau?
I want to pay of some of my old debt, but when I search the net using te listed company names off my credit bureau, I can’t find any contact info. The actual companies I owe don’t exist anymore or are under new ownership. My accounts have been sold or given away? I don’t know I just want to pay these people back but it’s been a pain in the neck findng someone to work it out with.

Collection Agency Wrongfully Added Negative Marks to Credit Score?
I was contacted by a debt collection agency who advised me that I had outstanding past due amounts for charges that I was unaware of. I promptly responded to their correspondence in writing to inquire.
I never received a written reply. I contacted the company by phone and provided my account/reference numbers. I was then transferred to a “supervisor” who refused adamantly to provide his name. His response was simply (and I quote) “your account has been sent back to the original company”. You need to contact them directly. Click. (He hung up on me.) All my subsequent calls are either “misrouted” or hang ups.
Does this sound as shady to you as it does to me? Who should I contact to make sure that this negative debt isn’t put onto my credit report or affect my score?

During this current climate of economic instability, illiquidity in the credit markets, in the stock market, uncertainty in the stock market and the softening real estate market, one thing remains constant – good students should be given the opportunity to build a credit history. Responsibility, however, is imperative. It is essential that students keep in mind that if they don’t have enough money to buy something now, they should consider waiting until they can. Credit cards are most beneficial to students when then balance is paid in full every month. They should be treated like cash in hand. In these thorny economic times, where credit is proving to be more difficult to come by, it is important to establish a strong credit profile by obtaining credit early and maintaining a consistent payment history. Student credit cards issued by Discover and Capital One are perfectly designed for student applicants.

How long does it take for credit card latenesses to fall off one’s credit report?
I’ve heard that “baddies” stay on a credit report for 7yrs from the date of first delinquency.
In 2002, I had a Visa lateness recorded on my credit report. Next to the lateness, it said “due to stay on credit report until 3/2005″ which is only 2.5yrs not 7. Then in spring 2005, the lateness vanished from my credit report! (hooray!)
But in early 2005, I fell into financial problems again(job loss) and a few more 30day credit card latenesses got recorded on my credit report. In the past month, one of these 30day latenesses has vanished from my TransUnion report, along with any mention of the account(which is a good thing, since it’s been closed and was only open a short time anyway; the account was not beneficial to my Fico score)
I was wondering if the remaining 30day lates will disappear from my report once they hit the 2.5yr mark? Or, have the credit reporting regulations changed since 2002, and I will be stuck with them for the next 4.5yrs? Any experience w/ cc lates?
