Is a credit card number really valid for a deposit on a service?

I own a small business which often takes credit card numbers over the phone as a deposit. We recently had a customer no show, and she contested through her credit card company when we charged her (she claims it wasn’t explained when she gave us her #). The credit card company took her side and said it is policy to allow anyone contesting to get their money back if there is no signature. How can this be? So many hotels and services take card #’s as deposits!

Have you suffered from “identity theft” of any kind? I myself recntly discovered from a credit reference agency that someone had a few years earlier taken out a £3,000 loan and put it down to me. I myself take all computer security seriously so it seems to me that the lenders are the people who are not taking security seriously by allowing such things to happen.
Who can I report if somebody is lending out there social security to an illegal alien?

I am working on fixing current credit woes and I want to know if getting a second credit file is feasible, worth it, etc……
Ok let me post more details because I see that there is confusion regarding my question…….I mean a second credit profile, the companies that offer a unique 9 digit number that you are able to use instead of ss for credit purposes. They say its legal and I wanted feedback from people familiar with this process

I have just paid off one credit card and a substantial amount on another credit card. If I were to apply for a loan with someone and they were to check my credit report, how long after the time that I have paid off my credit card, can I expect it to show on my credit report, so that they people checking my credit report, would see the current balance of my CC’s?

I am an authorized user on 3 major credit cards. I have one individual department store account and one individual student loan account. Should I remove myself as authorized user from 2 of the most recent accounts and get a major credit card individual account? Would that help/hurt my credit?
